Fiber Bragg grating-based strain gage rosette

Fiber Bragg grating-based strain gage rosette

20 October 2010

HBM is now launching a new optical strain gage (SG) in rosette form the K-OR type

The rosette comprises three measuring grids at angles of 0°, 60° and 120°, to sense the strain as it occurs. As with electrical strain gages, this then allows the absolute value and direction of the mechanical stresses to be defined.

Only 43 x 47 mm in size, the optical K-OR rosette is one of the smallest optical SGs in rosette form in the world.

Optical strain gages (SGs) based on so-called fiber Bragg gratings, dispense with electrical signals and use light to measure the strain. So they are also suitable for applications where it is not possible to use conventional, electrical SGs. This includes, for example, in potentially explosive atmospheres, and areas where there is high voltage or powerful electromagnetic interference.

Optical strain gages are also ideal for materials testing of fiber composites.

Tests of up to 10 million load cycles with a strain of ±5.000 µm/m are now possible. Conventional, electrical strain gages are not able to meet such requirements. It is very easy to detect the measurement data with optical SGs, and then analyze it.

HBM can provide users with all the components they need from a single source. These range from optical SGs with appropriate accessories, to interrogators, to the data acquisition software catman®AP, which includes a special EasyOptics module for optical SGs.
