First “Smart Tunnel” Installation in Greece

Following the 4th industrial revolution and the internet of things, ES Systems has recently completed the installation of the first condition monitoring system on a tunnel of a motorway in Greece for Olympia Odos (www.olympiaodos.gr).

The advanced system, called Smart Tunnel, provides permanent monitoring of tunnel equipment through sensors, wirelessly transmitting data to the cloud through intelligent data collection nodes and input to the maintenance analytics system.

The integrated sensors collect data from generators, pumps, fans, electrical systems (batteries, UPS), and the transformers in each tunnel. This is a complete solution for monitoring equipment using artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, which will gradually be extended to all motorway tunnels.

Smart Tunnel aims to better design and implement infrastructure maintenance programs using the new Internet of Things tools. The system will also help increase equipment life, improve safety and service levels, and significantly save tunnel maintenance costs.
