Web-based data acquisition for harsh measurement environments

19 March 2015

HBM Test and Measurement expands the rugged SomatXR data acquisition system with a data recorder and an Ethernet switch. SomatXR was specially developed for use in harsh environments. Once measurement data is recorded, it is accessible from anywhere via web interface.

Modules in the SomatXR family are designed especially for road tests with construction, agricultural and mining machines and for summer and winter tests with road vehicles. The system is modular in design and scalable.

The new CX23-R data recorder and the EX23-R Ethernet switch achieve degree of protection IP65/IP67. They can be operated in a wide temperature range from -40 to +80 °C and also meet the requirements of MIL standard MIL-STD-202G in terms of vibrations. Measurement results are not distorted by water, vibration, impact or electromagnetic fields. Even measurements that pass through the dew point are possible.

The CX23-R data recorder is the main module of the SomatXR family. In addition to simple data logging, it is also possible to log data using the user's own interfaces. Position-related information and vehicle data can be acquired and assigned to a precise time with three CAN ports and one GPS port.

By using the CX23-R data recorder, SomatXR can be used completely independently for an extended time. Because the recorder has a web interface, all that is needed for system configuration and data visualization is an internet-capable device with a current browser. The EX23-R Ethernet switch has ten Ethernet ports, five of which are able to supply electrical power to external devices with Power-over-Ethernet (PoE). It supports the Precision Time Protocol (PTPv2) as standardized by IEEE.

HBM previously introduced the first modules of the SomatXR to the market. With the CX23-R data recorder and the EX23-R Ethernet switch, the system can now also be used for independent data logging without a PC connected.
