Bourns Opens Custom Magnetics Research and Development Center in Göttingen, Germany
Geothermally heated facility in Rosdorf brings Bourns' 44-person custom magnetics engineering team under one roof, with prototyping workshop and modern office space
RIVERSIDE, Calif. and ROSDORF, Germany - August 5, 2026 - Bourns, Inc. has opened a new research, development, and design center for its custom magnetics operations in Rosdorf, in the Göttingen district of Lower Saxony, Germany. The facility brings together the full 44-person engineering, prototyping, and design team — the same group that has been developing custom magnetic components at this site since Bourns acquired Kaschke Components in 2021 — in a renovated 3,000-square-meter building. Production of inductive components continues at Bourns' manufacturing sites in Tunisia.
The move comes after Bourns wound down ferrite production at the team's previous location, leaving it in a building that was too large for an engineering and design operation. Rather than adapt the old space, Bourns chose to start fresh — setting up the team in a facility built around how they actually work. Bourns President and Chief Operating Officer Al Yost traveled to Rosdorf for the facility's opening ceremony on July 9. The Rosdorf center is the latest step in the integration of Bourns' custom magnetics capabilities, which trace back to the founding of Kaschke Components in 1955 by Kurt Kaschke and the company's seven decades of expertise in application-specific magnetic products.
The center includes a prototype workshop with separate areas for measurement technology and qualification equipment — tools the engineering team needs to move from concept to tested design without leaving the building.
"Our custom magnetics engineers in Rosdorf know this work better than almost anyone in the industry — they've been at it for 70 years," said Brian Ahearne, Vice President, Products & Technology, Power Division, Bourns. "What we've done here is give them a proper home for it. They have a prototype shop, qualification lab, and office space that makes it easy to stay focused. When your best people want to come into the office instead of working from home, you know you've gotten the workspace right."
The center occupies two floors of a steel and concrete building in Rosdorf, just outside Göttingen. Built in 2011, the structure sat vacant before Bourns took it over and spent six months renovating. The result: 17 offices where each engineer has a permanent desk, a soundproof booth for uninterrupted work, two meeting rooms, and a work café — all designed with the home office as the benchmark to beat.
Heating and cooling come from a geothermal system: 12 boreholes drilled 99 meters into the ground feed two heat pumps, though only one is needed during normal operation. Rainwater drains into a surrounding basin and two on-site ponds rather than the municipal system. Bourns also added electric vehicle charging stations for employees. All renovation work — interior fit-out, electrical, painting, fire safety — was handled by companies based in Lower Saxony.
Bourns emphasized sustainability and regional sourcing in the center’s interior design. Göttingen-based pro office planned and implemented the concept. The height-adjustable desks and storage units incorporate particleboard made from 100 percent recycled waste wood, while the seating was sourced from regional suppliers. These choices create a modern workplace while supporting businesses in Lower Saxony.
