Flange torque sensor with optical data transmission

09 August 2024
Measure torques cost-effectively, reliably and maintenance-free

The measurement specialists at burster have developed an inexpensive torque sensor with an inductive power supply that is also insensitive to EMC interference thanks to optical data transmission. The sensor Model 8675 consists of a rotor flange with a DIN hole pattern and a stator (Fig. 1). This supplies the evaluation electronics for the strain gage in the rotor with energy, receives the measurement data digitised in the rotor via IR LEDs without contact and can transmit torques even when stationary. This eliminates the need for wear-prone slip rings and bearings, and the sensor is completely maintenance-free. Depending on the version, the measuring range is 0 to 100 Nm or 0 to 5000 Nm. The sensor is optimised for the vast majority of applications in mechanical and plant engineering, offering an accuracy of 0.2% or 0.1% (optional). It is the ideal solution for those who require reliability, a long service life and freedom from maintenance, without the need for higher precision. Typical applications include quality monitoring of electric motors and gearboxes, test bench construction and research and development.

This practical sensor is ideal for a wide range of applications

Its extremely compact design allows for seamless integration even in confined spaces. The optical IR transmission offers a distinct advantage for international use, eliminating the need for complex authorisation procedures for different markets. This not only reduces costs but also shortens delivery times. The torque sensor is available as standard with both an analogue output (0-5 V, 0-10 V, ±5 V, ±10 V) and a frequency output (RS422, 24 bit) as well as a USB connection for configuration (Fig. 2, 3). A test and calibration protocol is included in the scope of delivery. Optional standard and special calibration certificates, also with accreditation symbol, are available from the burster calibration laboratory and can be ordered directly if required. The temperature range is between -20 °C and +85 °C, and the maximum operating torque is 300 % of the nominal torque (Fig. 4).
