IEC-conform system for high voltage impulse testing

IEC-conform system for high voltage impulse testing

20 March 2012

HBM: In order to ensure the safety of the electrical supply network, all components such as transformers, switch components, surge voltage protectors, etc. must pass various tests. The devices are also subject to high voltage impulses, triggered in the network by lightning or switching pulses, for example.

The measurement technology specialist HBM is now offering a complete measurement technology solution with which such tests can be rapidly and easily implemented in compliance with the relevant IEC standards (IEC 60060-1 and IEC 61083-1).

The ISOBE5600 system consists of a transient recorder, a high voltage impulse attenuator and analysis software for high voltage impulses. So-called fiber-optic cable-insulated digitizers are used for the first time in this sector. The battery-operated transmitter unit measures potential-free and can also be operated within a high voltage environment without danger. The measured data are transmitted digitally via a fiber-optic cable to the receiver unit and evaluated there.

The curve shapes of the impulses can be measured during the test with the ISOBE4500 system and the measured data directly evaluated in compliance with the IEC standards. The tests can be implemented more easily and significantly faster with the new system. The testing time is solely limited by the charging time of the impulse generator.

The measurement of the curve shapes, saving and evaluation of the measured data and the creation of the test report are all implemented automatically with very little time outlay. Costs can therefore be saved due to the correspondingly higher throughput during testing.
