Qatar: CO gas monitoring in Science and Technology Park

Qatar: CO gas monitoring in Science and Technology Park

08 June 2021

MSR-Electronic monitors carbon monoxide in almost 20,000 m2 of parking space in accordance with EN 50545-1. Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) is an essential part of Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to make Qatar one of the world's most advanced economies through sustainable development within 2 decades. QSTP has become an internationally recognised landmark because its design is striking and contemporary, but respects Qatari culture and withstands the often harsh desert climate. The design by renowned architectural firm Woods Bagot from Australia focuses on a green oasis with the sound of running water. By comparison, QSTP has a total area of 90 hectares - over 125 times the size of a football pitch.

QSTP is part of Qatar Foundation (QF), which houses leading global technology companies, and mentors and supports a network of start-ups and emerging technology companies.. QSTP consists of a cluster of 8 leading international and domestic universities, primary and secondary schools, research centres and policy institutes, various school and community-oriented institutions.

Absolute safety from CO poisoning with gas sensors from MSR-Electronic. 5 dedicated parking zones with up to 1100 parking spaces are available to QSTP staff and visitors. The parking area meets all safety standards and is equipped with a gas warning system from MSR-Electronic in accordance with the European standards EN 50545-1 and EN 50271. The gas sensors monitor the harmful CO gas in the air and thus protect people and the installations from dangerous situations in parking garages.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly toxic, odourless and colourless gas. Among other things, it is produced during the combustion process in car engines. It therefore poses a serious health risk, especially in garages. At high concentrations, it can be fatal. The use of a CO gas detector is therefore mandatory for public garages.

The MSR gas warning system is connected to the ventilation system as well. According to the Qatar project specification, all fans are switched off when the CO level is below 20 ppm. Once the CO level reaches 20 ppm, some fans and smoke extract fans are operated at low speed. When exceeding 35 ppm CO, the number of jet fans is increased and the extraction runs at low speed. However, when the CO level reaches 250 ppm, all jet fans and smoke extract units run at high speed.

MSR-Electronic offers reliable sensors, controllers and warning devices for parking garages, tunnels and loading zones. More than 140 gas sensors (type SC2) continuously monitor the ambient air in a parking area of almost 20,000 m2. In addition to the electrochemical sensor element and the measuring amplifier, the sensor contains a μController for processing the measured values. All relevant data and measured values of the sensor element are stored in the μController in a fail-safe way and are transmitted digitally via the local bus to the Sensor Board (e.g. SB2 or MSB2 from MSR-Electronic). The calibration management is also integrated in the μController of the sensor. Calibration can be carried out by simply exchanging the sensor or by using the integrated, convenient calibration routine directly on the system. The Sensor Board communicates with the DGC-06 Gas Controller - the heart of the gas warning system from MSR-Electronic - via the RS-485 fieldbus interface.

The Gas-Controller DGC-06 from MSR has been developed for large systems or even for extensive connections. Everything is possible, from complex multi-storey car parks to access permissions that are switched by gas alarm. The GC-06 gas controller series can monitor and evaluate up to 128 gas sensors, including 96 digital and/or 32 analog sensors (4–20 mA). 4 freely adjustable alarm thresholds are available per sensor. For alarm messages, the controller system has up to 128 relays with potential-free changeover contact and up to 16 analog outputs with 4–20 mA signal.

Re-calibration by simple exchange on site. Calibration can be performed by simply exchanging the sensors or by the integrated, convenient calibration routine with selective access release directly at the system.

The gas detection system from MSR-Electronic conforms to: EN 50545-1, EN 50271, EN 61010-1, DIN/EN 61508, DIN/EN 60079-29-1, ANSI/UL 61010-1 and CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 61010-1.

The complete installation of the CO gas alarm system was carried out by the certified MSR partner SYSTEMAIR MIDDLE EAST QATAR LLC from Doha.
