Recognizing defects on matt surfaces

Recognizing defects on matt surfaces

17 June 2012

INB Vision AG, a company of the Micro-Epsilon Group, provides the surfaceCONTROL measuring system specifically for recognition of defects on diffuse reflecting surfaces. This system uses structured light projection to help detect and analyze local shape defects, such as indentations or raised areas on surfaces, which may only deviate by micrometres from their target measurements. The system also operates reliably on grained surfaces, including automotive interior parts.

surfaceCONTROL offers a variety of measurement areas ranging from approx. 150x100 mm² to 600x400 mm², and it takes just a few seconds to capture 3D surface data. A number of evaluation procedures are available, depending on the nature of the shape deviations being investigated. The 3D data can be used to calculate a flawless virtual cover data (??), or a digital whetstone can be used, much like a whetstone in press shops. These procedures allow reproducible, objective evaluation of surface deviations.

The structured light projection procedure is suitable for all surfaces that diffusely reflect at least part of the light. These include steel, aluminum, plastics, ceramics and other surface types. With reflecting objects, the reflectCONTROL system from Micro-Epsilon uses the deflectometry measuring principle.
