Open communication – Ultrasonic sensors with IO-Link
Thanks to their new IO-Link interface, Baumer’s Series 09 ultrasonic sensors can now communicate with the control bi-directionally. Thus, the sensors’ intelligence, e.g. the integrated sonic echo analysis, can be used externally. As a result they are more versatile than conventional sensors and increase the process reliability.
On the one hand, the sensor can be adjusted ideally to the current situation during the process via the direct communication from the control. For instance, the integrated temperature compensation can be switched off or on as needed. This results e.g. in quicker and more accurate measurands when the machine is started. The output function (edge/window) can also be adjusted individually according to the objects to be detected, which ensures a relaible detection in every situation. On the other hand, information emitted by the sensor can now be used for troubleshooting and therefore prevent process errors or machine breakdowns. The Series 09 feature the diagnostic functions “Missing Object” and “Weak Echo”.
Via “Missing Object” the sensor signals the control if there is no object in its measuring field. The user can then react at an early stage and adjust the following process steps to the erroneous situation if necessary. Objects reflecting the sound too weakly or soiling of the sensor are reported by using the diagnostic function “Weak Echo”. This information enables the user to optimally coordinate sensor and process and to schedule cleaning cycles more easily.
