Prevent flooding with ultrasonic sensors
SNT Sensortechnik AG: In villages close to larger rivers there is a risk of flooding during heavy rainfalls. In particular, the sewer system can not absorb the rapidly swelling water masses. In many places, underground caverns are built to serve as an emergency reservoir. If a certain water level is reached, the pumps are automatically turned on for the selective emptying of the caverns.
In the case shown here, the UPK series ultrasonic sensors are used to continuously monitor the water level in the up to 5m high caverns. They are mounted on the ceiling and face downwards. The level can be detected within a few millimeters. In the water drainage channels of the caverns the smaller UPX ultrasonic sensors are used. Here a switching output is scanned which is set to a certain water level.
Ultrasonic sensors are used in this application preferentially because they are robust. They have large ranges and are insensitive to dirt, dust and fog.
